Survivor Testimony
In the 1990s, SCE-TV and the South Carolina Council on the Holocaust recorded the experiences of 25 Holocaust survivors, 9 US Army personnel from South Carolina who witnessed the aftermath of the Holocaust first-hand, and 2 witnesses to the horrors of the Nazi regime. Below are the entirety of their testimonies. If you click directly on each survivor's picture you can see a brief summary of the testimony. Transcripts are available in PDF format and can be searched by keyword.
Teacher Resources
Eight of the testimonies below have been transformed into narratives specifically designed for classroom use and they include guided questions for students to answer as they read each story. These narratives are indicated below next to the accompanying video with the words Story for Students.
Additionally, it may be especially helpful for teachers to view Seared Souls: SC Voices of the Holocaust, which provides clips of the testimonies below embedded within documentary footage that could be very useful for helping students contextualize the Holocaust.
Also great for teachers to use with students is the Moral Courage video series with accompanying lessons, which highlights the actions of individuals who were actively involved in the rescue of fugitives who were fleeing from the persecution of the Nazis.
