Escaping the Holocaust: The Landsmann Letters

The College of Charleston's Zucker/Goldberg Center for Holocaust Studies has curated a series of letters from the Minnie Tewel Baum Papers of 1938 - 1941 that contains primary source documentation of the communication between the Landsmann family of Berlin, Germany and their relatives, the Baum family of Camden, South Carolina.

This correspondence details the challenges and heartbreak endured by both families as the Landsmann family endures increasing hardships under the antisemitic regime of the Nazis, while the Baums attempt to navigate the difficulties of securing the Landsmanns' escape and immigration to America.

This collection is uniquely arranged specifically for use in classrooms and each piece provides contextualization of the time period and questions to guide students' thinking about the material.

Additionally, we have added a lesson plan that can be utilized by teachers when they have students review these letters. All of these files can be located using the link below.
