South Carolina Council on the Holocaust

“The work that the SC Council on the Holocaust does is so important for our students in South Carolina. Having a chance to discuss and reflect on the past gives students the tools to be better citizens for our future.”

--Molly Spearman, State Superintendent of Education

SUMMER WORKSHOP

Dr. Peter Baumgarten of Blessed Memory was a German Jew who fled the Nazi menace as a young boy in the Kindertransport to England. This survivor of World War II moved to Aiken, SC as a chemist. His widow, Doris, still lives in Aiken. Several times Peter came to Columbia College to share his experience with teachers and students. Teachers who are examining their motivations for enrolling in the July workshop may wish to consider Peter’s observation made on the July workshop in a letter dated June 6, 1999.

“THIS COURSE FILLS AN IMPORTANT NEED. THE HOLOCAUST AND ALL ITS HISTORY, POLITICS, SOCIOLOGY AN PSYCHOLOGY WILL PUZZLE ALL OF US FOR A LONG TIME TO COME. COURSES SUCH AS THIS WILL PREPARE TEACHERS AN YOUNG PEOPLE TO BETTER FACE THE FUTURE AND PERHAPS SOLVE LITTLE PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY BECOME BIG ONES.”
Dr. Peter Baumgarten, Kindertransport Survivor and chemist, June 26, 1999.
